Mavis Tapping rules the Chicago Inquisitor typing pool with an iron fist, keeping the women working there in line through a combination of ridicule, nagging and favoritism. Needless to say, she is not well liked and is mocked behind her back. Her obsession with detail and her fanatical work ethic have made her a force to be reckoned with, for most of the reporters, who eventually must beg favors of her - she does not even hesitate to pester her nominal boss, Abraham Bailey (who hastily turns away if he sees her approaching with a certain look in her eyes). The sole exception to this is Michael Wembly, who she treats with a surprising softness. Gossip is that she "fancies" him.
